Rojin Shafiei (b. 1993, Iran) is an interdisciplinary artist based between Paris/Toronto whose practice spans moving images, photography, performance, sound, text, and installation. Her work is deeply informed by her experiences as an Iranian immigrant, addressing themes of displacement, time, feminism, violence, and human rights. By blending documentary aesthetics with symbolic imagery, Shafiei presents complex and diverse feminine subjectivities, often exploring the intersection of the personal and the political. Her work experiments with the compression and expansion of time, and the juxtaposition of still and moving images, creating immersive and reflective experiences.
Shafiei holds a BFA in Intermedia from Concordia University (2017) and is currently an MFA candidate at York University. Her artistic contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including the 2022 30x30 Award, the 2021 Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Master’s Scholarship, and the 2020 Quebec Council of Art Travel Grant.
Her work has been presented internationally, with exhibitions at the 2024 Traverse Vidéo, the 2023 Women of Iranexhibition in Winterthur, and the 2022 Cecinema Film Festival in Tuscany. Shafiei has also participated in prestigious residencies, including the 2023 KARP Residency in Togo and La Chambre Blanche in Quebec City. Through her multidisciplinary practice, she continues to explore memory, identity, and the politics of belonging with sensitivity and rigor.
